Film 4 FrightFest Day 1 Pre Start Update

Film 4 FrightFest Day 1 Pre Start Update – 17:18

It has been two years since my last FrightFest.

A new day job took me abroad in 2008, and 17 hour working days, every day, for the last two summers have kept me away from the London’s premiere horror film festival.

This year, owing to some fantastic planning on my part, I have managed to make it down.

I’m a little nervous about returning to the festival after a long absence. Will it be as fun as I remember? Will the crowds overwhelm me or will I return to the comfortable ease of a family environment with my freakish brothers and twisted sisters?

All this might sound like a bit too much consideration for a film festival.

But the FrightFest has always been an event for me, rather than just an advance preview of what my DVD shopping list will look like in six months time. The FrightFest is a mid-year marker.

“Half-way through the year JP; how close are you to emulating the success of your film-making heroes?”
“Who’s doing work better or worse than you?”
“What’s new and novel about horror this year?”

Answering questions like these are important to me because being a horror writer is an ideal I hold. A festival like this is a barometer of how closely I still hold that ideal and gauges the level of action I’ve taken in furtherance of it.

It means more than the day job PDPs I’m issued with because, in a day job, you work for money. But one lives for an ideal.

And the ideal, the name of the game over the next five days, is getting a bloody great scare.
